Shepparton Brass Band members have several good reasons to blow their own trumpet after returning from the Australian National Band Championships in Melbourne with a swag of awards.

It was a happy Easter for members of the Shepparton Brass Band — also known as Shepparton Brass and Wind — when they won numerous awards at the Australian National Band Championships in Melbourne.

Following on from success at the state championships in October last year, the group was looking forward to competing for the first time in the C-grade and D-grade sections as a concert band.

Their skills were put to the test in the categories of hymn, own choice piece, march and test piece.

After facing some fierce competition, Shepparton Brass and Wind came away as winner of the test piece and own choice categories, as well as the overall winner of the D-grade concert band category, scoring a perpetual shield in the process.

Shepparton Brass and Wind president Leona Gibbs was delighted by the outcome.

‘‘It was a wonderful moment for the group,’’ Ms Gibbs said.

‘‘We were pretty excited to take it out on our first time.’’

In the lead-up to the competition, the group worked in partnership with Mitchell Shire Concert Band and its conductor Eric Andersen.

Ms Gibbs said the group was ready to defend its title in C-grade at next year’s event in Brisbane on the Easter weekend.

The group will be performing its winning songs and other hits as part of the In Your Town project.

Hosted by Riverlinks and Greater Shepparton City Council, the project aims to deliver entertainment beyond Shepparton’s main performing arts centres and directly into local halls and smaller communities.

The first event will be held at Murchison Community Centre on Sunday, May 6, at 2.30pm, with another planned for Dookie in late May.

Entry is by gold coin donation.
