It has been described as grassroots democracy in action.

The Nationals are asking the community to decide on their candidate for November’s Victorian election.

And they are letting people ask those standing for preselection some questions ahead of a vote this month.

A forum in Mooroopna next week will offer the opportunity to grill the three people seeking preselection for the party.

The Nationals candidate will be chosen in a rare open community preselection on April 14.

Federal Member for Murray Damian Drum will host the question-and-answer session.

Mr Drum described the three candidates — Peter Schwarz, Peter Shields and Daniel Watson — as three ‘‘great local champions’’ whose plans for the region he looked forward to hearing.

Those on the electoral roll in Shepparton district can vote for who represents the Nationals.

State Member for Northern Victoria Luke O’Sullivan described the process as ‘‘grassroots democracy in action’’.
