Opposition hears of new stadium push

Matthew Guy visits Shepparton Sports Stadium yesterday with Liberal candidate for Shepparton Cheryl Hammer.

Funding for a new and improved sports stadium was well and truly courted yesterday.

Opposition leader Matthew Guy met Greater Shepparton City Council representatives at the regional sports precinct to hear a pitch on the needs and benefits of a new Shepparton Sports Stadium.

The council included a stadium redevelopment project in its ask of government document last year, aimed at putting requests on the table ahead of this year’s Victorian election.

In that document, the project ask clocked in at about $30million.

Member for Northern Victoria Wendy Lovell said the party would be ‘‘considering what’s been put on the table,’’ adding funding streams existed to help these sorts of projects become a reality.

Liberal candidate for Shepparton Cheryl Hammer said a stadium redevelopment was about more than visitors, events and tourism dollars coming into town, but also ‘‘an investment in sporting culture in this region’’.

‘‘Basketball is one of the biggest membership sports in our area.

‘‘So it’s an investment in our sporting culture as much as it is attracting tourism.’’
