Hundreds of people turn up for the Christmas For Those Alone lunch and entertainment. The group is seeking volunteers.

Eighteen years ago, a group of dedicated volunteers began Christmas For Those Alone, providing a free Christmas lunch to anyone who finds themselves alone or unable to have a meal with friends and family.

The group is looking for more volunteers to join the committee and share the gift of giving on Christmas Day.

Supported by Greater Shepparton City Council, the lunch is hosted at The MacIntosh Centre, with produce donated by local businesses on the day.

The group cooked 387 meals last year, catering for the hundreds of people who visit from across the Goulburn Valley.

Along with food donations, buses are also arranged to transport people from their homes.

Christmas For Those Alone president Steve Neff joined the group 12 years ago as Santa on the day.

‘‘It’s really the most rewarding thing you can do,’’ he said.

Mr Neff appreciates the effort of all volunteers, donors and sponsors. ‘‘It’s a fun day for all, we’re like a family celebrating Christmas together,’’ Mr Neff said.

‘‘We’re just looking for people that want to be a part of a team and want to have some fun.’’

The committee will begin planning on Tuesday, April 10, from 7pm with monthly meetings continuing until September. The meetings become more frequent in the lead-up to Christmas.
