Dumping site

The new Moama return and earn facility was an eyesore during the weekend after lazy litterers used it as a dump for trolleys and empty cardboard boxes.

People likely dumped the boxes at the site after using them to transport empty containers to the collection point.

The NSW Government’s Container Deposit Scheme facility, which was installed just a month ago, allows residents to recycle their bottles, cans and containers for a 10¢ refund.

The Moama facility has received positive feedback to date, with more than $1400 already collected and about 59000 containers deposited.

However, council is not convinced, with Campaspe Mayor Chris Bilkey expressing concerns the return centre would not be able to handle the influx of containers.

And he said this dumping confirmed council’s fears.

‘‘This is disappointing to see and unfortunately this incident reaffirms the concerns council has regarding the inadequacies of the facilities for dealing with large volumes of material,’’ he said.

Cr Bilkey is also concerned the scheme could lead people from border towns to buy products in Victoria — thus avoiding the levy on drinks that can be returned for recycling and undercutting NSW-based businesses.

Council has written to the NSW Government with these cross-border concerns, requesting they encourage the Victorian Government to participate in a similar scheme.

Tomra Cleanaway, which provides the network of collection points across NSW, said it was dedicated to keeping Moama’s return and earn facility running smoothly — and with minimal mess.

‘‘Tomra Cleanaway is responsible for ensuring the reverse-vending machine area is kept clean,’’ a spokesperson said.

‘‘If there is an issue, the phone number and machine number are listed on the machine, so people can call Tomra Cleanaway to report excessive rubbish.’’
