Victorian Open returns

March 10, 2018

Chance to go again: Shepparton Park duo Marg Smyth and Bev Cahill will get the opportunity to defend their Victorian Open women's pairs title on home soil this year after it was announced the event would be returning to the Goulburn Valley once more.

It is coming back and is set to be bigger than ever.

The Victorian Open returns to the greens across Shepparton this year, with the tournament extended from seven days to eight to accommodate the rising number of players.

Bowls Victoria announced the Open is on November 16 to 23 and Shepparton Park’s facilities will again be home base for the tournament and host the finals.

Entries have grown by 80 per cent in the past three years and the record-breaking 1681 entries and 2949 bowlers which took part last year is set to be dwarfed this year with the extra day allowing for new competitors.

The Goulburn Valley contingent is sure to be strong again this year, following last year’s successes by Parkers duo Bev Cahill and Marg Smyth who claimed the women’s pairs championship, and Tallygaroopna export Mitch Sidebottom being crowned the men’s singles winner.

Property developer Steller has renewed its naming rights sponsorship of the event.

Last year, the partnership saw prize money jump from $42000 to $48000 and players making the final 16 in each event were rewarded, not just quarter-finalists and beyond as in previous years.
