The Shepparton Women’s Health Centre will host the first of two free Life! programs for this year, starting next month.

The free Victorian lifestyle modification program helps people reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

Run by expert health professionals, the program is delivered as a group course or a telephone health coaching service.

Centre community health nurse and Life! facilitator Donna Rumbiolo understands that changing one’s lifestyle isn’t easy, especially on one’s own.

‘‘This approach to prevention of diabetes and cardiovascular disease has been shown to be more effective than taking medication and has a long-term positive effect on your health,’’ Ms Rumbiolo said.

The Life! program gives people the motivation and support needed to make and maintain positive changes and to adopt healthy behaviours and a more active lifestyle.

The program, run as a group course at Shepparton Women’s Health Centre, consists of seven sessions that run for 12 months on Tuesdays from 6.30pm to 8.30pm.

Funded by the Victorian Government and managed by Diabetes Victoria, Life! is the biggest prevention program of its type in Australia.

To be eligible for the Life! program, men or women must be above 18, have a body mass index above 25 and an AUSDRISK score of 12 or above.

‘‘People may also be eligible if they have a certain pre-existing condition that increases their risk of diabetes or heart disease,’’ Ms Rumbiolo said.

‘‘Shepparton Women’s Health Centre ran the Life! program last year and had a positive response,’’ she said.

The Life! program is also run by other organisations in the local area.
