Mooroopna Bakery has started its Royal Children’s Hospital Good Friday Appeal hot cross bun fundraiser for the second year running.
Following last year’s success, the bakery is busy making weird and wacky flavours of the traditional hot cross bun.
Baker Bart Honig said the bakery donated $6000 last year to the Good Friday Appeal and was hoping to go bigger and better this year.
‘‘We thank our customers for the amazing support we received last year,’’ Mr Honig said.
‘‘We decided to do something different in our first year, and it has now become a trend with other bakeries getting involved.’’
From every six-pack of hot cross buns sold, the bakery donates $1 to the appeal.
The bakery shares the flavours of the day on its Facebook page, announcing new flavours and old favourites.
While the bakery has created a number of variations during the past year, Mr Honig said the most popular were jam doughnut, Golden Gaytime and salted gooey caramel.
Mr Honig said creating the flavours was a team effort, with a lot of trial and error going into making the perfect combinations.
‘‘We get ideas from our family members, staff and customers ... everyone has ideas of what we should be making,’’ Mr Honig said.
‘‘We like to put our own twist on the flavours; there has been some that have failed and others that have worked really well.’’
Mr Honig said the bakery decided to get involved last year after seeing the work done for the Good Friday Appeal by Bushies Bakery in Glengarry.
‘‘We know firsthand what the Royal Children’s Hospital does for a lot of people in the community, so we thought it would be nice to donate back,’’ he said.
With Easter less than two months away, Mr Honig said customers could expect a number of new flavours in the coming weeks, in particular a special Valentine’s Day hot cross bun made form strawberries, cream and chocolate.
The Mooroopna Bakery also has a Good Friday Appeal tin for customers to donate what they wish if they do not want to buy any hot cross buns.
