Verney R students with Seeley International representatives celebrate the arrival of two buses and five new tricycles for the school.

Children’s charity Variety Victoria delivered and presented two brand new Sunshine Coaches and five new tricycles to Verney Rd School students and staff yesterday.

Supported by Variety Bash sponsor Seeley International, the coaches will give students direct access to their broader community.

The Shepparton school provides education for children and young people with mild, moderate or severe intellectual disabilities from age two to 18.

Variety chief executive Janette Connolly was delighted to fund the new coaches for the school.

‘‘We know how much they rely on their current coaches and without them, the students wouldn’t be able to get out and about in the community to engage in extra-curricular activities with their peers,’’ Mrs Connolly said.

Variety is a national not-for-profit organisation committed to helping children living with illness, disability or disadvantage the chance to reach their full potential and follow their dreams, regardless of ability or background.

Year 12 student Marcus McCubbin was selected to participate in the handover of the keys and provide a speech on behalf of his school’s students.

‘‘It will help out the school a lot because our teachers will be able to drive these buses,’’ Marcus said.

Verney Rd School principal Janet Gill Kirkman said the buses would also help with influencing positive student behaviour, communication skills, emotional wellbeing and maximise independence in daily life and learning.

‘‘We’ve got two brand new buses which is just fantastic. Our students need to be out in the community, it’s so important for children and young people with disabilities and be able to be engaged in the community and this bus program will be great to be able to do that and we’re very thankful to Variety,’’ Mrs Kirkman said.
