Gators to battle Warriors

January 13, 2018

Passing off responsibility: Shepparton's Naomi Amos took on the playing-coach role last week, but coach Chris Judd has returned leaving the experienced player to lead on court.

There are no easy games in this year’s Country Basketball League competition and Wangaratta is even tougher than most for Shepparton.

The Lady Gators travel to the Lady Warriors’ home stadium to be tested against a side which will also feature in finals.

Wangaratta is a spot above the third-placed Shepparton, with a well-rounded side helping them hold such a high ranking.

But the Lady Gators will meet their opposition at the ideal time.

The Lady Warriors enter the match on the back of two sizeable losses, unable to match their skills with the absolute best in the competition.

Having been unable to defeat top-of-the-table Wodonga and struggling against Wallan, Shepparton knows it is up to the test.

Chris Judd has his side entering the match full of confidence having strung together two wins on the trot.

One of the biggest positives to come out of Shepparton’s strong 10-point victory against Myrtleford was a change in the top scorer.

While Rhianna Barton has been a fixture in the leading points-getters for Shepparton, and ranked second overall in theleague tally, Marni Sharp took the mantle on Saturday.

Adding to Sharp’s 17 points, the forward produced a complete game, not letting one aspect of her performance slip.

The experienced heads are not the only ones the Lady Gators will look to in order to gain the upper hand against Wangaratta.

Kior Zito is thriving on the time she spends on court as is teenager rising star Maddi Dowling.

Naomi Amos will be left to focus solely on her on-court duties, after taking charge as playing-coach last week.

But with Judd back from holidays, he returns to the sidelines to give direction.

Having started the year in an uneasy fashion following a late start to training, the Lady Gators will look to continue the consistency they have formed in the second half of the season.
