Lauren’s boardin’ the sports editor’s train

January 12, 2018

Breaking new ground: Lauren Bordin has been appointed the first female sports Editor of The News.

Lauren Bordin has been appointed sports editor at The News.

She has taken over the top job from Oliver Caffrey, who is moving to Canberra for a new role with AAP after four years with the sports department including one as sports editor.

Lauren joined The News as a cadet sports journalist early in 2016 and has established herself as a respected and talented journalist in the field.

She has covered a wide variety of sports, but most notably has provided excellent coverage of netball in the region, covering the fortunes of the Murray Bushrangers in the TAC Cup and reporting on local football talent entering the AFL system.

Lauren is the first female sports editor employed by The News.

News editor at The News, Cameron Whiteley, said Lauren’s appointment ushered in an exciting new era for the sports team, and would continue a long-standing tradition of local, in-depth sports coverage.

‘‘We look forward to continuing to tell the stories that matter to our community across a range of sports,’’ he said.

Lauren said she was rapt to receive the opportunity and build upon the outstanding work set by her predecessors.

‘‘I’m thrilled to continue my time at the Shepp News and lead the sports team into another action-packed year,’’ she said.

‘‘It’s genuinely an honour to become sports editor and keep the community updated with everything happening across the region’s grounds and courts.’’
