Fourth lap around the park

Shepparton Park Run Event Director Allan Connolly and Sue Olley. Saturday's five kilometre run was Allan's 100th Parkrun.

Record numbers: 272 people ran, jogged and walked a 5km course around Victoria Park Lake as Park Run celebrated its third anniversary in Shepparton.

Shepparton Park Run event director Alan Connolly hopes to see a record 300 runners at this weekend’s fourth event.

Mr Connolly said the event started in January 2014 after he had attended a park run event in Melbourne.

‘‘My wife was discussing while I was doing it and she suggested it would be good for Shepparton,’’ he said.

The initial event ran as a trial with just eight runners.

‘‘That was mainly just family and friends and we had 67 for the first event,’’ he said.

With some 200 runners regularly taking part in the Shepparton Park Run, Mr Connolly said they hit a record at last year’s event with 272 people taking part.

Mr Connolly said the idea behind starting the event was to improve community health and fitness with participants running 5km around the Victoria Park Lake precinct.

City of Greater Shepparton Mayor Kim O’Keeffe will be in attendance.

‘‘We’ll have a few little presentations at the start and some cakes and treats at the end,’’ Mr Connolly said.

Shepparton Park Run on Saturday starts at 7.35am, with the run starting at 8am near the new Shepparton Art Museum site, Victoria Park Lake, Wyndham St, Shepparton.
