She may not take to the court, but Heather Lees is an influential contributor off it.
The Goulburn Region co-ordinator is a passionate contributor to representative tennis and has been rewarded for her patience with another Inter-regional Country Championships victory.
Lees pulled together a side that secured the Goulburn Region’s drought-breaking victory last year, after 56 years without a win.
Senior player David Starling said some of the team’s motivation came from wanting to win for Lees.
‘‘She loves it and we love her,’’ Starling said.
‘‘It was a great time, but she is pretty tired, she’ll need a couple of days off.’’
Lees was the person responsible for planting the seed in the team’s minds that it could really make a mark at last year’s tournament.
‘‘I remember Heather saying ‘do we dare to dream?’ and I said ‘Heather keep a lid on it’ and we were just working through the events and she was getting more and more excited and as a team we desperately wanted to get a win for her,’’ Starling said.
Like always Lees continued to support her side for as long she was needed.
Even when a heat delay meant matches went well into the night, Starling said the winner of the 2016 Tennis Victoria Vic Community Champions award was one of the last to leave.
‘‘She was there at seven or 7.30 on Saturday morning and didn’t leave there until 10.50 when the last Goulburn player walked off the court,’’ he said.
‘‘That’s the dedication she has, she’s amazing.’’
Now with back-to-back wins, Lees will start thinking ahead about how the side can make it three straight with the Goulburn Region a force again.
