Six CFA units were called to the unoccupied residence on Orrvale Rd at 6.10am following reports of smoke.

‘‘Upon arrival, members conducted a search of the building and found no-one home,’’ CFA district 22 operations officer Peter Dedman said.

Mr Dedman said units brought the fire under control within 20 minutes, containing it to the back lounge area..

Victoria Police arson explosives members were due at the scene yesterday, along with CFA forensic scientists.

Shepparton police’s Criminal Investigation Unit Detective Senior Constable Troy Wickham said it was fortunate firefighters contained the blaze, but said it still caused significant damage.

‘‘The fire is believed to be suspicious and deliberately lit, investigations are ongoing,’’ he said.

‘‘Anyone in the area around that time, anyone who saw cars or anyone coming or going is urged to call.’’
