David Daws is having a season to remember.
The Shepparton Golf skipper claimed the Goulburn Valley Bowls Division men’s singles title on Sunday on his home green, adding to his club singles win and division pairs runner-up spot during this season.
Daws had to overcome outstanding opposition and sweltering conditions to complete the triumph, defeating Euroa legend Ken Sutcliffe 25-24 in a thrilling contest.
Sutcliffe led by as much as eight shots early in the final, but Daws slowly clawed his way back.
The Euroa stalwart flew out of the blocks to take a 10-2, then 12-5 advantage.
A three to Daws on the next end seemed to bring him firmly back into the contest, but Sutcliffe was again deadly on the draw to pull away to a 14-8 lead.
From there Daws went on a stirring 8-0 run to turn the contest on its head.
After wrestling the lead back though, Daws again found himself behind — this time at the crucial stage of 23-24 — but was able to lift to another gear once more to claim two shots on what proved to be the final end.
Daws overcame Rushworth’s Kevin Gilbert 25-23 in the quarter-final and East Shepparton’s Scott Adams 25-16 in the semi-final on Sunday to win his way through to the decider, making for a long day in temperatures that reached the 30s.
Sutcliffe got the better of Hill Top’s Justin Spedding 25-17 in his semi-final after engineering a similar scoreline (25-18) against East Shepparton’s Geoff Franze in the morning’s first round.
Daws and his fellow Golfers will resume their two-time pennant title defence this weekend when they host Kyabram.
Daws has been among the competition’s better skips in the first eight rounds, winning four of his six matches with a shot difference of +27.
