Competition offering those interested a friendly game of bowls

January 06, 2018

Come join: The Goulburn Valley Ladies 60-and-over competition are happy to welcome any new members to play with them during Thursday competition.

Plenty of socialising: President Moira Smith, Hilda Biach and Val Bourke all got into the Christmas spirit at the end of last year.

A dedicated bunch of players take to the bowling greens each Thursday for the Goulburn Valley Ladies 60-and-over bowls group competition.

But there is room for plenty more when the organisation starts back following the Christmas break.

Up to 60 players take part in the competition, with the group celebrating at a Christmas event at Mooroopna Golf in December.

Goulburn Valley Ladies 60-and-over bowls group president Moira Smith said the tournament has been successful, having only been recently started.

‘‘It’s only been going for three years and we play it every Thursday during the (regular pennant bowls) season,’’ Smith said.

‘‘We play at the different clubs that have registered for us to play so there are about seven or eight clubs that we travel to; we go up as far as Kyabram so it’s a big competition.’’

Smith said the attractive part of the group is bowls is played in a friendly atmosphere, particularly for those players who want to take a step away from competitive bowling.

The group is made up of players from across the region willing to change their fixturing to support local clubs.

‘‘It depends on what other tournaments are being played, we like to support the other tournaments and not take away from other tournaments, they need the money,’’Smith said.

Those interested in taking part can contact group president Moira Smith on 0400231508.
