Shepparton Bulls duo Jarrod Bingham and Eliza Long were crowned mixed doubles winners at the Goulburn Valley JT/AMT Championships yesterday.
Bendigo-based Long exited the singles in the semi-finals, while Bingham was unable to move past the first round of the men’s singles, allowing them to each focus on the mixed doubles.
With plenty of the region’s players producing an impeccable tournament, the mixed final was also an all-Goulburn Valley affair.
Bingham and Long needed two sets to overcome Tatura’s Matthew and Brooke Starling in the big dance.
With a 6-2, 7-5 victory, Long and Bingham rose from being eighth seed to secure a championship title.
Arguably their greatest test game in the quarter-finals when in a gruelling match the Shepparton Bulls duo defeated the top seeds to carry confidence for the rest of the tournament.
Hope Curtis-McDonald could not bring a women’s doubles win home along with her singles title, after she and partner Brooke Starling were sent packing in the semi-finals.
The title was won by third seeds Steffi McDonald and Keona Mendis, while Timmy Karpinski and Thomas Pavlekovich-Smith were too strong for Echuca’s Erik Holt-Crossman and David Hough in the men’s final.
Shepparton’s Nick Gattuso and Sam McHarg came agonisingly close to a finals appearance, but the pair was defeated 2-6, 7-6, 10-7 by Holt-Crossman and Hough in an entertaining semi-final.
