Shepparton’s Victoria Park Lake was closed at the weekend due to a broken sewer main and the record rain event.
Shepparton experienced 66 mm of rain across the three days to yesterday, according to the Victorian region of the Bureau of Meteorology. Most of this fell on the Saturday, marking the heaviest daily December rainfall on record in 22 years.
Goulburn Valley Water advise a broken sewer main in Wyndham St, Shepparton and an increase in stormwater inflow has caused Lake Victoria to be temporarily closed due to water quality issues. Crews were on site fixing the main.
The issue was reported to the Environment Protection Authority. GV Water and Greater Shepparton City Council were monitoring water quality while the problem was rectified.
“Signage has been placed around the lake advising residents that it is currently closed to all users,” a statement read.
“Lake water quality will be continuously monitored over the coming days."
“There are minimal risks to the community, however, residents are advised to avoid contact with lake water until further advised.”
