A breakfast event held by Shepparton Access has recognised the dedication of local businesses in supporting people with a disability.
Yesterday more than 60 people gathered at The Connection, Shepparton, ahead of the annual International Day of People with a Disability this Sunday.
‘‘(The breakfast) was really around appreciating the dedication of local people ... Their contributions and achievements in supporting people with a disability to be included in our community,’’ Shepparton Access chief executive Wendy Shanks said.
The contributions of Janelle Pottenger and Heather Madgwick were celebrated, with the two applauded for their work in the sector.
A former World Championship and Olympics head coach of the Opals basketball team, Jan Stirling, was the guest speaker at the event.
Mrs Stirling shared her journey from elite basketball player to award-winning coach, and told how she and her sister were adopted by the same family — from different bloodlines.
Mrs Stirling also spoke about her time as a coach in Russia, the AIS in Canberra, working with the NBA, dealing with the media and player egos.
Her main piece of advice during her impressive speech was to ‘‘surround yourself with people who are better than you’’.
