Yorta Yorta man Adam Briggs and one half of the hip-hop duo A.B. Original has welcomed Triple J’s decision to change the date of its Hottest 100 countdown.

Traditionally on January 26, the radio station had spent the past year gaining feedback from its listeners and this week announced it would have the countdown on the fourth Saturday in January each year.

The decision was made out of respect for indigenous communities and Briggs, fellow rapper Trials and several stars walking ARIA awards’ red carpet praised the ABC for the change.

‘‘It’s a beautiful tip of the hat and a beautiful baby step towards a very big race, and a very long journey that we’re all apart of, and it’s beautiful that we’ve got ears up there that wanna talk and listen and communicate with us,’’ Trials said.

The indigenous duo had been vocal in its opposition to Australia Day, releasing the track January 26 last year protesting against it.

‘‘It’s a dumb day, it’s stupid. Australia Day is trash ... You’ve got 80000 years of history here and you want to celebrate Australia Day? That’s trash,’’ Briggs said.
