Wam bam, it is time to join the WAM fam.
Greater Shepparton City Council’s Word and Mouth offers young people aged between 12 and 25 the chance to make a positive difference in their community.
Once a year, Word and Mouth recruits young people for their proactive and fun youth committee.
Word and Mouth project manager Jim Gow said joining the committee was the perfect chance for young local people to get involved with changing their community for the better.
‘‘It can appeal to young people that have either finished Year 12 and are having a gap year locally or are choosing to study locally, to engage with Word and Mouth and help shape their communities, right up until they are 25,’’ he said.
Word and Mouth young people volunteer their time once a week, usually for up to two hours, and look to put on about eight events each year.
Shepparton’s Afrah Abkar has been on the committee for two years and joined because she wanted to give back to the community.
‘‘Being on the Word and Mouth committee allows you to meet diverse people and connect with other cultures,’’ she said.
‘‘It allows you to meet other people and make friendships, it also allows you to take on event management roles.’’
Fellow committee member Tayla Saunders, 17, has enjoyed her time on the committee and has loved getting involved in planning events.
She said it would be sad to leave the committee next year when she heads off to university.
‘‘When we say WAM fam we’re literally a family,’’ she said.
‘‘I’ve enjoyed my time and I’m sad that I’m going next year.’’
Mr Gow said Word and Mouth helped fill the gap between childhood and adulthood.
‘‘Everything Word and Mouth does is for those that live in this gap,’’ he said.
‘‘The gap is the reason Word and Mouth exists. The gap is the reason that we put on eight or 10 events a year.’’
Joining the youth committee is a 12-month commitment which provides young people with an enormous amount of experience across a broad range of duties.
During the year, young people will contribute from 150 to 200 hours to their community as a whole.
Applications for the youth committee are open and close at 9am on Monday.
