Shepparton voters will be be able to take part in the Nationals’ community pre-selection.
Anyone registered for the Victorian seat of Shepparton will have the chance to vote for the Nationals candidate on April 14.
The successful candidate will be the endorsed candidate to try and take back the seat at the next election, expected in November next year.
The model is similar to the primary method which is common in the United States, where candidate selection is open up to the community, not limited to party members.
Nationals state president Neil Pankhurst was looking forward to see how the process would play out.
‘‘The community pre-selection gives the people who know the region best a leading role in choosing who will be the Nationals candidate in the 2018 state election,’’ Mr Pankhurst said.
‘‘I look forward to working with the Shepparton branch and (Nationals leader) Peter Walsh on this unique opportunity for a truly democratic pre-selection process.’’
Anyone interested in running as the Shepparton candidate can nominate from February 12 until March 9.
The The Shepparton community pre-selection will be the first for Victoria.
