Dowell Windows and Doors is undertaking works to move into the old Bunnings site on Benalla Rd, although it may be some time before the move is complete.
The new site, which is about 8000sqm, will allow the company to expand the fabrication business and house its complete product range.
Store operations manager Shane Rodda said while the refurbishment process was moving at a slow pace, the business had spent the past few months planning.
Mr Rodda said the finished site would include offices at the front of the building, as well as a showroom, which would eat into the existing car park.
‘‘We’ve put a lot of time and planning into the refurbishment, and we want to keep the whole Bunnings shed as it is for production,’’ he said.
‘‘There’s no real work that has begun as such, we’ve cut a few trees down and secured some council permits to build new access points, but we’re going to build a new fence to make it secure before the building of the structure starts.’’
Mr Rodda predicted that the site would look completely different once finished, taking up much more space than the old site.
He said the site would create further employment, but the business wasn’t looking at hiring until at least mid-2018.
More products will also be added to the location, once the new facility is fully operational.
‘‘We were already looking at expanding, we were looking at land and other sites as well, but the owner thought this was a good spot because of its position,’’ Mr Rodda said. ‘‘It just gave us scope for something a bit bigger, to produce more and put up with the demand that we currently have.’’
Mr Rodda said the store at the Bunnings site would likely be in full operation by September.
