Jan Daldy brought in roses from her Karramomous garden for the Kensington Gardens’ function.

The Kensington Gardens retirement community celebrated the Melbourne Cup in style, with chicken, champagne and lots of roses on Tuesday.

Activities kicked off at 11am, with the community’s own cup sweeps and race attire at the ready.

Social committee chairperson Sue Walsh said the day was a great social function and a way for the people to put on their best finery.

‘‘It’s just a way of keeping everybody together and joining in the spirit,’’ Ms Walsh said.

‘‘We’re a long way from the Melbourne Cup and it means we can really participate in the day without having to travel to Melbourne or have to worry about all the crowds, we have our own special day.’’

At the same time, the Hill Top Golf and Country Club held a Melbourne Cup lunch in Tatura.

Publicity officer Judy Baker said about 100 people showed up to enjoy a three-course meal and sweeps on every race.

‘‘Everyone had a wonderful time and dressed up beautifully in fascinators and lovely ties,’’ she said.

‘‘We had alternating meals of chicken and salmon, it was a great social, fun day.’’
