Day full of neighs for Hayes

The Hayes, Hayes and Dabernig train will be in full flight at Flemington today with Euroa’s Lindsay Park having 19 runners at Flemington.

Of the 19, David Hayes, who co-trains with his son Ben and nephew Tom Dabernig, will have his eyes firmly fixed on Melbourne Cup hopefuls Boom Time and Ventura Storm.

Boom Time, the surprise winner of last month’s Caulfield Cup is a $26 chance in latest betting for today’s main race, will seek to become the first horse to complete the Caulfield-Melbourne Cup double since Ethereal in 2001.

Cup winning jockey Cory Parish will ride Boom Time again from barrier nine, while Lindsay Park’s other runner Ventura Storm will jump from barrier six with three times Melbourne Cup winning jockey Glen Boss in the saddle.

Boom Time has tended to be overlooked as a potential winner of the Cup, partly due to his pedigree and partly because he went off at 50-1 in the Caulfield Cup.

But Hayes said it sometimes pays not to overlook the obvious.

‘‘Boom Time is a Caulfield Cup winner with no weight and the horse that ran third (Johannes Vermeer) is a favourite, so I feel pretty good,’’ he said.

‘‘I have always thought Ventura was the better of the two, but obvious form is good form.

‘‘He (Boom Time) is a Caulfield Cup winner and he would be the longest-priced Caulfield Cup winner in a Melbourne Cup ever. But rather than take exception, embrace it.’’

Ventura Storm has overcome a bruised heel suffered when 13th to his stablemate in the Caulfield Cup.

Lindsay Park has adjusted the stayer’s shoeing and Hayes thinks the Flemington track will be more forgiving than Caulfield, and with more work since last month’s race Ventura Storm will be competitive.

‘‘The Caulfield Cup was a hard run and I had kept him fresh for it,’’ David said.

‘‘On the day I thought I might have mucked it up and had him a bit underdone trying to make him sharper.

‘‘I think with that good mile-and-a-half run and a lot of work since, he’s responded well.’’
