Shepparton RSL will drop down a tier for the coming Goulburn Valley Bowls Division season.
Following an eventful winter, which resulted in the club moving to Shepparton Park, members decided its two sides will compete in division two and division four this year.
Last season, Shepparton RSL fielded a top tier side as well as teams in division three and division six during Saturday pennant.
Club chairman Ron Thorp said members recently came to the conclusion they wanted to change sections.
‘‘We have decided to go down a division in an effort to remain competitive and we lost a few players over the last few months and in order to remain competitive the members felt it was best to step back a little bit,’’ he said.
‘‘The decision was made a bit over a week ago and we’ve been in talks with the GVBD since then and they had to alter the fixtures to accommodate us a little bit.’’
Shepparton RSL now use Shepparton Park’s greens after the RSL sub-branch made the decision to turn the Wyndham St bowling green into a car park.
But numbers still remain strong at around 60 members and Thorp said they are all enjoying the new playing base.
‘‘It’s been absolutely great, we’ve already had some great times out there with Sunday morning bowls that have been well patronised by our members and by Shepparton Park,’’ he said.
‘‘The last few weeks we’ve had over 40 people on very cold, wintry Sunday mornings.’’
Thorp said players were already looking forward to RSL’s first round match up against Tallygaroopna.
●The GVBD fixture for the coming season has been released with seven divisions across the league.
The top tier will revert to being called division one, rather than the Allan Matheson Shield.
Two sections of division five have been included, respectively named red and blue.
In the top flight, Shepparton Golf start its quest for a third consecutive title when it hosts East Shepparton in round one on October 21.
A grand final rematch against Shepparton Park will come in round three as the competition includes a bye midway through November as well as three weeks off at Christmas.
