Firstly - Phil Eaton had a minor fall in the car park last week and nearly sliced his thumb off but after a hospital visit, he is recovering well.
Captain Terry Duffy is back home now after his surgery and is able to move around but says although he will be out of golfing action for a while, he will be back at the desk to keep an eye on everyone as soon as he can.
The nine holers wish them both a speedy recovery.
The Dan Andrews covid cup
With golf restricted to the majority of the members it was decided to have a game of golf between those eligible Mulwallians and a few sneaky ones from yarra who were allowed onto the course on Thursday.
Bomber Mitchell had kindly donated one of the many best and fairest cups he had won for sporting behaviour during his playing career to keep costs down and it was decided to call it the Dan Andrews covid cup. Hopefully, we won’t have to play for it ever again!
With only 15 members turning up a few extra activities were added to make it more interesting. Playing on the blue course it was Col Rosser and Greg House who led the charge going shot for shot and hole for hole until they got to the par 3 on the 6th when Col skied his tee shot and hit a magpie, losing his ball in the bushes.
In front of them were Stan “the man” Clarke, Ron ‘smokey’ Dawson and Denis “drillbit” McNelly having fun in the long putt competition final on the 9th hole.
Both Ron and Denis hit amazing 40-foot putts within 6 inches of the hole only to have Stan Clarke steal their thunder when he “decoded” the slope of the green as his putt snaked left and right and left again to slowly roll in the hole.
Back on the par 5 it was the longest drive competition with some very good (and very bad) drives. The eventual winner was Dave “hitman” Dorgan who’s 80-yard tee shot was grabbed by a squirrel which ran to the side of the fairway.
Unfortunately an eagle had been circling overhead and grabbed the squirrel - complete with golf ball - and carried it off in the distance towards the green.
The squirrel managed to wriggle free and fell gently to the ground, dropping the ball in the process, which landed 5 foot from the pin.
Sadly Dave missed the putt - but he did win the longest drive competition as it was determined his ball had gone 450 metres.
Meanwhile back on the course things were heating up in the daily competition - with Andrew “lawman’ Spilva, Billy ‘the kid’ Hidson and John “bear” Mason chasing Col Rosser and Greg House’s terrific start.
Following closely one hole behind them was ‘digger” Dunne, Gary “milky” White and Ted “seeya” Latta all playing some seriously good golf trying to win the covid cup.
Unfortunately for them Norm Moule - who had been on the turps with Normie Prior the night before - was dancing and singing in the middle of the fairway, providing a major distraction.
It was a close run with Greg House winning on countback from Ronnie Dawson - unfortunately Col Rosser subsequently had his card disqualified because he and Bill Hidson had handed in the score cards from the crazy golf at Tunzafun where they had 10 pars and 4 birdies and a hole in one between them.
No animals were hurt or injured in the production of this event.
The nine holers social day will be on June 17 for a 12-noon shotgun start.
Pick a partner for the 4 ball! Please advise if you will be attending so catering numbers can be ascertained.
