Two killed, 20 hurt in Turkey mine blast

At least two people have been killed and 20 others wounded in a coal mine explosion in northern Turkey, Health Minister Fahrettin Koca says.

Rescue efforts are ongoing at the mine in Black Sea province Bartin's Amasra district, Koca wrote on Twitter.

A blast occurred at the mine about 6.15pm on Friday.

The cause was not immediately clear, the Bartin governor's office said.

Up to 49 workers are believed to be stranded in the mine, state broadcaster TRT quoted Bartin Governor Nurtaç Arslan as saying.

Injured people were taken to ambulances on stretchers, broadcaster HaberTürk footage showed.

The exact number of workers on site at the time of the explosion was not initially known.

Turkey has a bleak record of mine accidents due to weak safety regulations.

In 2014, a total of 301 people were killed in a major explosion at a coal mine in the Soma district of the Aegean province of Manisa.
