Tackling the best: Euroa's Hayley Whitehand will join 20 other rising stars in AFL Goulburn Murray's youth girls V/Line Cup team.Out of here: Euroa's Hayley Whitehand tries to get her handball away despite pressure from her Finley opponent.

Despite the youth girls V/Line Cup changing formats this season, AFL Goulburn Murray football development manager Trevor Mellington is confident the side can defend its crown.

‘‘We were undefeated in the competition last year, so there is a challenge amongst our girls to maintain that high standard of performance,’’ he said.

‘‘The talent is exciting and this competition is a great way for the players to showcase their skills and compete against the best from across the state.

‘‘Our youth girls program continues to grow and develop each year.’’

Because of the TAC Cup’s new under-18 youth girls competition this season, the V/Line Cup is now an under-16 tournament, and the region’s best youth girls will be playing on September 25 and 26 in Traralgon and Moe.

The local rising stars will take on teams from Bendigo Pioneers, Geelong Falcons, Gippsland Power, North East Border, Peninsula Stingrays, Western Bulldogs and Yarra Ranges, with Paul Brown, Jorja Daniel (Finley) and Madelaine Kindellan (Euroa) coaching.
