Students ready to shine at special dinner

Students from GOTAFE’s Shepparton campus are gearing up to host the education provider’s hallmark event next week, the Dookie Wine Show.

A dinner features a five-course degustation menu paired with seven finalist wines from the wine show held in July this year.

To be held at the McIntosh Centre at the Shepparton Showgrounds on Tuesday, September 19, the event will be run by about 30 GOTAFE students.

‘‘The event incorporates both back-house and front-of-house students,’’ GOTAFE events, tourism and hospitality trainer Claire Taylor said.

‘‘So it’s cookery students and apprentices who are actually creating the menu and then there is certificate III in events, tourism and hospitality students and diploma of events students as well.’’

Ms Taylor said students had been working since May to organise the event.

‘‘The students will actually create the food on the night and the events students have been organising the decor, how it’s going to look and doing the hiring and marketing,’’ she said.

This year’s dinner has been crafted around a Moroccan theme, showcasing distinctive flavours and spices as well as decor from the African country.

‘‘The dinner is a huge part of the students’ curriculum and it all culminates on the night,’’ Ms Taylor said.

‘‘It’s a great teaching tool for the students and obviously we’re doing things in real time, it’s a real event with real paying customers.’’

About 30 tickets remain for the 220-person dinner, which will begin at 6.30pm on Tuesday, September 19 at the McIntosh Centre.
