Report backs community’s rail concerns

August 12, 2017

A local state MP says the Victorian Government has no excuse to not replace ageing rolling stock on north-east regional rail lines.

State Member for Euroa Steph Ryan says a ‘‘damning’’ report on the state of Victoria’s regional rail service backs up the views of north-east commuters.

The state’s Auditor General this week handed down a report canvassing V/Line’s significant maintenance costs, over crowding and findings that the service repeatedly fell short of performance targets.

The Nationals’ deputy leader particularly highlighted the age of rolling stock on the Shepparton and north-east lines as ‘‘well beyond their 30-year design life’’.

‘‘V/Line’s own assessment of its trains shows that $53million of rolling stock needs to be replaced immediately,’’ Ms Ryan said.

‘‘Daniel Andrews needs to come good on the promise he made to replace the ageing rolling stock on the north-east line now we have secured a $140million investment from Federal Infrastructure Minister Darren Chester to improve the track.’’

Ms Ryan said the report backed up concerns many people on the Seymour and north-east lines had raised with her about overcrowding in recent months.
