Haimish Mawson, 21, died on Sunday morning while on a trip to the United States.

The family of a young Shepparton man who died in Chicago at the weekend has issued a statement expressing their grief over the loss of a gifted guitarist with ‘‘an infectious smile’’.

Haimish Mawson (Hamish Bosevolomo), 21, died on Sunday morning while on a trip to the United States, after attending the Lollapalooza music festival in Chicago.

Stepfather Darryl Remnant said the family had been in contact with a Chicago medical examiner and were making arrangements to bring him home.

Haimish attended Guthrie Street Primary School and Wanganui Park Secondary College before he pursued a career in construction through his family’s business.

The full statement can be read below:

‘‘Haimish’s love for music had no bounds, and this is what drew him to Chicago to attend the Lollapalooza Music festival, where he couldn’t wait to see some of his favourite artists, like Chance the Rapper and The Killers.

He missed his chance to go to the Splendour in the Grass music festival, so he was extremely excited to travel to the USA.

Haimish was an extremely gifted guitar player, which he taught himself to play, and loved mixing music and sound tracks. He wanted to pursue a career in this field in the near future.

His family had been receiving daily messages and photos of all the awesome places he had visited in LA and Chicago, and Haimish was so ecstatic and happy to be travelling and making new friends. We could see how happy he was and always had a huge smile on his face.

We realise that bad news sells and is popular, but Haimish was an extremely private person, and would not like or appreciate all the scrutiny and attention surrounding this.

Haimish had a huge group of friends, and this is evident by all the awesome comments and messages left for the family.

Haimish will leave a huge hole, not only in his own family’s lives, but in everyone who had come into contact with him. His smile was infectious and he was extremely kind hearted and would do anything to help others.

Haimish first attended Guthrie Street Primary School in Shepparton, and was still good friends with most of his classmates. He then attended Wanganui Park Secondary School.

He left school to pursue a career in the family business at Mawson Constructions.

He is survived by his mother Jennie, father Ben, older sister Natassja, younger brother Isaac and step-father Darryl.’’

The family has asked for privacy.
