Forest Fire Management Victoria has started recruiting project firefighters and new permanent forest and fire operations officers for the season ahead.

Advertising started this week for project firefighters and 15 permanent forest and fire operations officers in the Hume region.

‘‘These forest firefighters are an important addition to our resources as we prepare for the upcoming fire season,” Hume acting assistant chief fire officer Shaun Lawlor said.

‘‘This fire season, Forest Fire Management Victoria will have over 1000 forest firefighters, supported by a further 2000 staff from across DELWP, Parks Victoria, Melbourne Water and VicForests, who have a fire role in addition to their normal duties.

‘‘Statewide, there are 300 project firefighters positions available along with 49 new permanent forest and fire operations officer roles.’’

Project firefighters, and forest and fire operations officers, respond to bushfires and other emergencies, help deliver the planned burning program and undertake a variety of fire preparedness activities, including road, track and firebreak maintenance.

They also help with the maintenance and improvement of forest recreation sites, pest and weed control works, and other forest management activities.

These jobs will be based at Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning and Parks Victoria offices and depots in regional Victoria.
