Gleeson performs at Kiwi music festival

Kyabram performer Callum Gleeson was one of fewer than 50 acts to perform at one of New Zealand’s biggest music festivals last month.

‘‘The Bay of Islands Country Rock Festival brings artists from around the country and Australia to eight venues in one town,’’ he said.

‘‘It was the third year in a row that I’d been invited to the prestigious festival and it was quite an honour.’’

The 29-year-old began his career at the age of nine and released his fourth album, titled Callum’s Most Requested Volume II, at the festival.

‘‘The crowds varied depending on the venue but the largest one I performed at was probably in front of around 300 people,’’ Mr Gleeson said.

‘‘Nothing compared to my biggest crowd of around 60000 people at the Gympie Muster, where I performed straight after Lee Kernaghan.

‘‘But I think the crowds were pretty happy ... they didn’t throw tomatoes at me.’’

Mr Gleeson said he one day hoped to make it to the pinnacle of the country music festival scene, Nashville.

‘‘It’s the be-all and end-all for country music singers,’’ he said.

‘‘Until then I’ll keep listening to music, playing music and performing at gigs around the Goulburn Valley and in NSW.’’
