House fire deemed suspicious

A house fire in Numurkah at the weekend is being treated as suspicious, police say.

Cobram Criminal Investigation Unit Detective Senior Constable Mathew Prestage said he met with an arson chemist from Melbourne at the scene of the fire yesterday.

The house was under extensive renovations when it went up in flames in the early hours of Sunday.

A passing taxi driver noticed the Tocumwal Rd fire about 1.55am on Sunday.

Several CFA units from Numurkah and surrounds attended to extinguish the blaze, which gutted the house.

Det Sen Const Prestage said police did not think the blaze was connected to a series of tyre slashings in Numurkah on the same night.

Anyone with information or CCTV footage who lives near the area and might have caught anything on film between midnight and 2am should phone Cobram CIU on 58712866.
