Greater Shepparton City Council has written to the Federal Government seeking a meeting with ministers to discuss the attributes of the proposed Shepparton-aligned inland freight route between Melbourne and Brisbane.
The council’s investment attraction manager Geraldine Christou said council was urging the government to ensure that ‘‘the optimium route through the most productive areas is chosen’’.
Ms Christou and council representatives will meet with Federal Member for Murray Damian Drum next week to discuss the proposal.
A Shepparton forum last week heard about local benefits of the National Trunk Rail proposal being chosen as the preferred route, but plenty remain sceptical that the choice of alignment remained a foregone conclusion.
An Albury-aligned route is also being considered.
At the forum, stakeholders had stressed a decision was imminent and that they would seek to keep the Shepparton-aligned ‘food bowl route’ — described as a faster, flatter, shorter route — alive for as long as possible.
