Member for Northern Victoria Wendy Lovell has flagged Greater Shepparton as the ideal location for a regional Victorian air freight port.
Speaking in parliament last week, Ms Lovell also suggested Greater Shepparton City Council was ‘‘currently considering a new greenfield site for the Shepparton airport’’.
‘‘I’m hopeful that the renewed industry push in recent weeks will convince the government that an air freight port in Greater Shepparton — which would service industry within a 300km radius — has local backing and is of merit, and I am supporting this push,’’ Ms Lovell said.
She said an air freight port in Greater Shepparton would allow the export of product directly from ‘‘our growing region to Asia, for example’’, and would save on the need for produce to be transported to Melbourne.
‘‘Now is the time for innovative and progressive commitment from the government to realise the potential and numerous benefits in decentralising produce and other exports from the metropolitan region,’’ Ms Lovell said.
‘‘This is a very solid idea and the government owes Greater Shepparton to give it strong consideration and any appropriate support.’’
In Parliament last week, Ms Lovell requested Ports Minister Luke Donnellan establish an inland freight airport in Greater Shepparton, adding that in 2015 she had been in discussion with the council and the Committee for Greater Shepparton about the significant benefit that would come from such a proposal.
