Car enthusiast Don Kendall could not have been a more perfect prize winner of the Rotary Club of Mooroopna’s major annual raffle — a brand new KIA Cerato.
Mr Kendall, from Tallygaroopna, said he initially did not believe he had won the raffle, drawn on New Year’s Eve in Mooroopna, after receiving several phone calls with bad reception while away camping.
It was not until his mate from Lockington, who was attending the New Year’s Eve Festival in Mooroopna where the prize was drawn, called Mr Kendall that he knew it was legitimate.
‘‘He said ‘can I have the Clipper?’ and it was then I released I’d actually won.’’
His mate was referring to Mr Kendall’s classic 1957 Clipper, one of his prized possessions.
The major win came after a lucky streak for Mr Kendall, who said he had also taken out a Men’s Shed raffle on Christmas Eve.
‘‘I usually put my tickets in Sandra’s (his partner) name; it’s the first time I’ve put my name on a ticket,’’ he said.
He said he thought his luck must have accumulated during this time, before he bought the winning ticket from Numurkah.
Rotary Club of Mooroopna president Chris Clark said the club received great assistance from Thompsons Motor Group.
‘‘They give us a really good deal every year,’’ he said.
He and member Les Young said it was not the first time they had broken the news to the winner while they were away on a camping trip.
The raffle was drawn after the fireworks display at the Mooroopna Recreation Reserve.
