Benalla Racing Club had to cancel Monday’s race meeting because of surface water on several sections of the track.
An alternative meeting will now be held this Sunday, January 15, with the club offering free entry.
It is the second time this season that a meeting has been lost at Benalla due to surface water after the feature Benalla Gold Cup meeting in September was also abandoned and then reprogrammed to March 25.
The track received 13mm of rain in two hours on Monday morning.
Steward Sam Cochrane said an initial decision to abandon the meeting was made because of the forecast for further rain in the afternoon, along with concerns over a wet section of the track.
General manager Cameron Symes said safety for the horses and jockeys was the first priority.
‘‘With the surface water laying around we deemed it unsafe for riding,’’ Mr Symes said.
‘‘Lucky enough we have been able to re-schedule the meeting to this Sunday.
‘‘The club will open the gates and have free entry for the day.’’
The first race on Sunday will be at 12.15pm.
