THE CHRISTMAS spirit was on show on December 25 when 56 people sat down in the Heathcote Uniting Church Hall to share Christmas dinner.
The idea was the passion of the local Hobley Family who wanted to share their festive joy with people who may not have anyone with them on Christmas Day.
They put the idea to the church council that their monthly Community Lunch Program could be extended to include Christmas Day. The idea was eagerly embraced and so the planning began.
Jill Vros was one of the main instigators of the lunch, hating the thought of anyone having to spend Christmas Day alone.
‘‘It’s such an important day to spend with friends and loved ones, so for those who don’t have that, it can be tough,’’ Mrs Vros said.
‘‘It was great to see so many people sit down and enjoy each other’s company over some wonderful food.’’
Others helped them to set up the tables and decorate the hall and by noon on Christmas Day the hall was full and looking very festive. The meal was a hot roast with a choice of four different meats and all the roast vegies. Dessert was plum pudding and custard for those who wanted it, and fruit salad and pavlova for those not quite so keen on plum pudding.
Mrs Vros said that while a significant amount of planning went into setting up the day, the number of volunteers ensured that everything went off without a hitch.
