Salvos are aiming to raise $20 million this year across the country, with the needs of Australians to reach a peak this year following the COVID-19 pandemic.
Major Rosie Massey is encouraging the Yarrawonga community to get involved and donate what they can.
“Christmas is the busiest time of the year for The Salvos across the country and we expect this year to be no different,” Ms Massey said.
“The Salvos want to leave no one in need this Christmas and we need the generosity of the public this year to once again partner with us in support of locals doing it tough.
“Our wishing tree is back at Kmart/K-Hub and we’re especially looking for gifts for children eight and above, with teenage years the most sought after as they are often missed in these appeals.
“You can drop them off wrapped or not at the tree in the Yarrawonga store, with stickers available to label what age group the presents are for.”
Last year during the Christmas period The Salvation Army distributed more than 64,000 hampers and vouchers worth over $1,89 million as well as more than 26,000 gifts and toys to families.
The Salvos also supported people with more than 130,000 meals across the country, more than 66,000 beds and over 10,000 families in need of accommodation during the festive season.
“Anyone in need this Christmas throughout the Yarrawonga region can reach out to us at the Wangaratta Salvation Army by calling 5722 1129,” Major Massey said.
“If you need food, gifts, financial support or are feeling lonely, please get in touch.
“We are also in need of our local community to dig deep and provide donations to The Salvos to ensure we can support our local community.
“We are in need of toys and non-perishable food which can both be dropped off at either 39 Ovens Street or 13-17 Garnet Avenue.
“Donations will be given to families in need across our region including Yarrawonga, with four families from that area already lined up which Phillip Bright will be coordinating.
“You can donate financially at salvationarmy.org.au or by calling 137 258.”
