Fresh blood brings hope

Congupna has announced a spate of fresh faces it hopes will lift the club from the Murray Football League cellar next season.

The Road, which endured a barren 2016 without winning a game and finished with a percentage of 9.38 at senior level, has bolstered its ranks under new coach Tyson McKenzie.

McKenzie’s senior assistant coach will be the experienced Jarrad Mason, a familiar name to many football followers throughout this region.

Mason crosses to Congupna from Stanhope, where he played more than 200 games and featured in three Kyabram District Football League premiership-winning teams, in addition to two flags at Shepparton East.

A goalkicking midfielder with blistering pace, Mason will add depth to The Road’s engine room.

So too will Alex Overs, a member of Shepparton Swans’s drought-breaking 2014 GVFL premiership side, who crosses to The Road from Picola District Football League club Katamatite.

Wingman Mitch Skinner follows McKenzie from Eastern Football League club Silvan.

Skinner played 17 games for the Cats at senior level in 2016 and is described as ‘‘an attacking, quick and skilful winger’’.

Mooroopna key forward Daniel Schaper, who has played 19 senior games for the Cats during the past three GVFL seasons, is poised to add quality to the forward line.

Lancaster defender Mitch Di Petta has also been signed to add steel, good size and speed to the Congupna defence.
