Warning comes after spate of house fires

November 30, 2016

CFA District 22 duty officer Peter Dedman reminds Greater Shepparton residents to be careful with electronic items at home after a spate of structure fires in the past week.

No one has been hurt, but five homes have been badly damaged by fires in the past week.

‘‘There were a number of different causes for the fires but it does serve as a reminder for people to make sure their electrical items are working properly as they can be a common cause for house fires,’’ Mr Dedman said.

‘‘If they are faulty, get them replaced. We also find appliances that are left on while no one is at home are a common cause for house fires.’’

Meanwhile, Fire Danger Period restrictions start in Shepparton next Monday.

‘‘Time is running out for people to clean up their properties and if they are lighting a fire, we ask them to be careful and also call the Burn Off hotline first on 1800668511,’’ Mr Dedman said.

‘‘People in zoned residential areas need a permit from Greater Shepparton City Council to light a fire before the Fire Danger Period begins.’’

Property owners who wish to light a fire in the Fire Danger Period will require a permit.
