Jazzy: Azem Elmaz (middle) gets into swing of a jazz band practice at Mooroopna Secondary College. The students later presented a cheque to him of almost $1400 for charity People Supporting People.

Azem Elmaz welcomed a $1400 donation to charity People Supporting People from Mooroopna Secondary College’s music department on Wednesday during jazz band practice.

The school raised the money by hosting the Shepparton Interschool Concert in September, when secondary school music departments came together to showcase their talents to the public in cabaret style.

The annual event sees each school raise money through entry fees and a raffle, with each school providing an item for the raffle prize on the night.

Music teacher Lindy Tennant said this year music leaders from each of the schools chose People Supporting People to be the beneficiary of their fundraising.

‘‘It’s great to see young ones supporting those less fortunate. This donation will keep the soup kitchen going for three weeks,’’ Mr Elmaz said.

Meanwhile, the Mooroopna Secondary College Jazz Band will be having an end-of-year concert to send off its Year 12 senior band members tonight at Mooroopna Pizzeria from 6.30pm.

‘‘Some of the senior band members have been around for six years and they told me, ‘we need to have another jam’,’’ Ms Tennant said.

The event is free to attend.
