Congupna and Tallygaroopna primary schools’ years 4, 5 and 6 students got the chance to participate in a multicultural tour of Shepparton last Friday.
The tour was designed by Shepparton police with the idea of giving children the chance to integrate and learn about the various cultures in our region.
Shepparton police multicultural liaison officer Senior Constable Matt Walker said the initiative was a great way for children to learn about the friends they would have when they went to secondary school.
During this year’s tour, students visited Rumbalara where they were given a tour by Uncle Leon Saunders and then they visited the Iraqi and Albanian mosques.
Sen Const Walker said the students enjoyed many great moments on the excursion including a barbecue at Rumbalara and morning tea at the Iraqi mosque.
‘‘I think learning about the first and original culture of the land will be what most kids will benefit from down the track, along with getting an appreciation of our diverse community,’’ he said.
Sen Const Walker said this was the second year the program had been held.
‘‘We hope to continue it and expand to the other outskirts primary schools,’’ he said.
