Inquest into collision on highway

Police are continuing to investigate a serious collision at Tallygaroopna in which two people had to be flown to hospital on Monday afternoon.

The incident happened along the Goulburn Valley Hwy at about 2.30pm after a white Ford panel van travelling south and a semi trailer travelling north collided.

After the collision the GV Hwy was closed between Tallygaroopna and Congupna until 5pm with traffic redirected to Katamatite.

Shepparton police Highway Patrol First Constable Renee McClure said there was a third vehicle that narrowly missed the accident and drove away.

She said witnesses described the vehicle as a white, possibly Western Star, tipper with a dog trailer, travelling behind the white panel van involved in the incident.

‘‘Tyre marks indicate the tipper has braked heavily and the tyres are most likely in very poor condition as a result,’’ she said.

Two males were trapped in the panel van but were rescued and flown to Melbourne in serious conditions.

First Const McClure said she was looking for any witnesses who may be able to identify the vehicle or driver.

Anyone with information can phone Shepparton police on 58205777 or Crime Stoppers on 1800333000.
